The High Tatras are Slovakia's highest mountains, and accommodation is concentrated in three main resorts. Štrbské Pleso is the highest, a base for the mountain lakes and for skiing. Starý Smokovec sits in the middle of the range with a funicular to Hrebienok. From Tatranská Lomnica a cable car climbs to Skalnaté pleso and Lomnický štít.
The village of Ždiar below the Belianske Tatras is quieter and suits family hiking and beginner skiing. The foothill villages and Poprad offer more affordable apartments and cottages, with the resorts a short drive or a ride on the Tatra Electric Railway away. When choosing a stay, consider whether you would rather be close to hiking trails, cable cars or town amenities. This can make it easier to plan both your outings and your downtime.
